A look at Monochrome Fashion

MONOCHROME

Monochrome, minimalistic fashion is timeless. It can be worn at any age and always looks classy. From a simple pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt to a more sophisticated black and white dress, monochrome can be worn in any season at any time.

It can be seen in collections from almost every designer. Some of the most noticeable could be:

Chanel Suit 1986
. It is an undeniable fact that the Chanel suit is one of the most famous staples in fashion. Chanel believed that woman should be able to look sophisticated and professional while also being comfortable and able to move around. After the war, women didn't want to go back to being housewives and instead wanted to work. The Chanel Suit used masculine elements to help these post war women look the part but also stay stylish and presentable. As seen here in white with black trim and accents, this look shows how classy monochrome can be.

Alexander McQueen 2009/10. McQueen was another talented designer that used monochrome in his work. He was known for his extravagant, avant-garde looks, this being no exception. This extraordinary dress uses monochrome stripes and houndtooth patterns to create the desired effect. It is a perfect example of how monochrome can be used in patterns to create different shapes on the body and although on paper these patterns should clash, they actually flow well together due to the minimalistic colours.

Valentino Fall 2015. This is a more minimalistic white dress with black piping at the edges. Although this is a high fashion dress, it is simple enough to be worn in an everyday situation such as a dinner date. Valentino's Fall 2015 collection showcased many monochrome looks, this being one of the more simple understated ones. It is a great example of how designers can strip monochrome back to the basics and still have it looking stylish. By matching the clutch bag to the dress and keeping the belt and boots block black, it changes the flow of the outfit and brings the eye into the centre of the garment.

Milly Collection for Kohl’s Spring 2015. This look is more of a casual take on monochrome. The outfit has echos of sportswear with the loose-fitting trousers, the white stripe and the basic white and black bra. However the designer, Michelle Smith, has managed to keep this look smart by pairing it with barely there heels and a sheer, sleeveless shirt. This proves that monochrome is versatile and can be dressed up or dressed down. The large black bow on the model's head creates a couture feel to this outfit and ties in well with the look of the rest of the outfit.

Overall, monochrome is an easy to style fashion statement that has carried itself through the ages and has adapted well to changes in fashion. We are confident it will continue to grow and change and appeal to all ages.
