DIY! Lavish Lace up t-shirt

How to DIY a simple lace up top!

You will need:

  • shoe lace or piece of ribbon
  • Any T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Eyelets and (if possible) Eyelet gun

Step 1 - Dot your cut away zone

Lay the top out on a flat surface and mark a dot where you would like the V to end and how wide you want it to be on the neckline. This determines how low cut the top will be so it's better to undercut the V than to over cut. Bare in mind you will, later, need to have seam allowance around the edges so the V will be 1cm wider than you cut it in the end.

Step 2 - Join dots and alter if necessary

Join the dots you marked in Step 1 (two on the neckline and one further down on the centre to create the point of your V). This can be done free hand but using a ruler or straight edged object gives you more accuracy and will make your finished piece look more professional.

Step 3 - Cut out your V neckline

Please ensure that before you take scissors to the fabric, you have tried on the marked top and are happy wit the area you are about to cut out. If you are happy with the size and shape of the V then cut it out.

Step 4 - Tidy up those edges

Fold back roughly 1cm of fabric from around the V you have just cut and pin to hold in place. When you have pinned and checked the seam allowance is even, you can go ahead and sew it.

Step 5 - Cut holes for lacing

Have the t-shirt laying on a flat surface again and mark where you want your holes. Ensure these are equal distance away from each other and the edge of your V. Once measured make a very small hole and either use an eyelet to finish it or stitch around the edge of the hole to stay fraying.

Step 6 - Lace it up!

Once all your holes are finished off, go ahead with lacing the top up. We used old shoe laces for this but you could use anything (e.g ribbon, rope etc). The way you lace this up is down to preference but take into account how many holes there are and whats the best for lacing that up.
