DIY! Simple yet Sexy Bodysuit

An 8 step simple bodysuit!

You will need:
  • T-shirt (preferably long-line)
  • Poppers or Velcro for fastening
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • One pair of pants

Step 1 – Lay out the top!

First of all, lay out your top flat in front of you. Make sure that the fabric is long enough to meet between your legs for when you cut it. To ensure the top was long enough we picked up a long-line basic black top from Primark for £3.

Step 2 – Pop on the Pants!

Next, lay a pair of pants onto the top of the t-shirt. To make it more accurate you should measure from between your collar bones to your crotch to get a rough measurement with some extra fabric for a seam allowance where the two sides of the crotch should meet.

Step 3- Cut!

When you have decided where your pants need to be placed you can go ahead and cut! We were planning on hemming the bottom edges of the bodysuit after we cut it out so if you are wanting to finish your edges properly when cutting, cut 1cm away from the pants.

Step 4 – Double check!

It is very easy to cut squint so remove the pant when cut, fold the bodysuit in half and make sure that the top of the leg holes reach the same point. If not carefully adjust…you don’t want the leg holes to be so high you look like someone from an 80s dance film... or maybe you do! Each to their own!

Step 5 – Sew that seam allowance!

If you don’t have access to a sewing machine then you can either sew by hand or, stretch materials used in most t-shirts tend to roll on the edges if not hemmed so you could leave the edges unfinished and they should naturally tuck away. If you do have access to a machine then you, like us, could sew a simple 1cm seam allowance buy folding the raw edge back 1cm and sewing.

Step 6 – hem that crotch!

Hem 1cm on the raw edges of the two parts that meet at the crotch. Pin the hem first and try on to make sure they still meet underneath with one over lapping the other. When happy with the size of your seam allowance, machine or hand-sew that into place.

Step 7 - Sew on poppers!

For this step, you can either use poppers or Velcro. Place your bodysuit on a flat surface sew two half of the poppers or one side of the velcro on the underside side of the bodysuit and the two other halves onto the outside of the other side.

Step 8 - Pop together and try on!

You should now have a fully functioning bodysuit, don't worry about any wonky stitching, it should be totally hidden when you wear it with bottoms!
